A teenage schoolboy hasn’t turned up for classes.  Not so unusual perhaps – but Ashley Forrest is thought of as the most reliable day-pupil they have at Elwood Priors School, and his headmaster is worried.

So comes the call to his acquaintance, D.I. David Russell, a call which is to project Grancester’s child protection officer into perhaps his darkest investigation yet.  An enquiry which is to inspire horror as it progresses, and to terminate in a night of frenetic activity by the police – and by others intent upon the same ends, albeit by differing means...

Following from Winter’s Tale, the last D.I. David Russell novel, Gameboy is unusual among crime literature – the action takes a mere few days from start to finish, and much of its fascination derives from the interweaving of characters, many of whom are familiar from Geoffrey Lewis’ previous detective stories.

After a break of some six years, Geoffrey Lewis has returned to the genre that launched his writing career.  Bowing to popular demand, SGM Publishing are proud to now present the fifth book in the D.I. David Russell series of crime novels.  Written originally in 2004, Gameboy picks up Russell’s career in the early summer following the dramatic events of Winter’s Tale; and in similar fashion to its predecessor what seems at first to be a simple case of a missing person quickly grows into an investigation of horrifying proportions as the background to the boy’s disappearance come to light.  And in the course of its fast-moving conclusion, it comes to light that the police are not the only ones searching for him.  Russell expects and fears a tragic outcome – but then he finds himself speculating upon how he’s ended up with the wrong body...

Familiar characters stalk these pages, although his regular assistant DS Doug Rimmer is away on holiday, including once more Russell’s teenage son and his friends, along with many new faces.  The interweaving of these disparate personalities is complex, but follows with a logical inevitability as the story progresses; and at one point, an almost farcical humour flashes its light through the darkness.  This is a tale to delight all of Mr Lewis’ many fans, and as ever concludes with surprisingly upbeat final pages.
